MB1 follow-up honors thesis

Taylor Stone, Lafayette College

Taylor Stone, a graduating senior at Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, US, learned about ManyBabies while taking a class from Dr. Lauren Myers. Her experience in that class inspired her to conduct a secondary analysis of MB1 data for her senior honors thesis. Specifically, she used video recordings from 4 labs (PIs: Sara Cordes, Robin Panneton, Dare Baldwin, and Derek Houston) to examine aspects of infant and caregiver behavior during the experiment.

Results indicated that older infants (13-16 months) made more “bids” for attention to their caregivers during the experiment than did younger infants (6-9 months) (Fig. 1). The number of infant bids was positively correlated with the duration of fussiness throughout the experiment (Fig. 2), but was not associated with looking time to IDS (the primary measure of interest in MB1). Taylor also looked at how caregivers’ reactions (or non-reactions) to infants’ bids related to overall fussiness – if you’re interested in learning more email us and we’ll let Taylor know!

Taylor’s project is a great example of the many questions that can be investigated using openly available ManyBabies data and project materials. We applaud Taylor for her great project and Lauren for incorporating MB into her teaching! Please get in touch if you are interested in learning how you can do the same or if you have a project you'd like us to highlight.
