Pupil dilation is often interpreted as a measure of cognitive load and as a measure of violation of expectation (VoE). In the test phase of the MB3 experiment, such VoE is predicted when novel sequences are presented. Similarly, during familiarization, cognitive load is thought to diminish as repetitions of the same stimulus require less attention to process them. The goal of the proposed spin-off is to empirically test such predictions. At least 15 labs in MB3 are collecting data with eye-tracking which provides a great opportunity to study pupil dilation in rule learning tasks. Data collection is not necessary for this project, as the project will make use of the MB3 data. Please let us know whether you are interested in joining this spin-off by completing this when2meet for an initial meeting in January 2024 or by sending an email to Ingmar Visser.

Project Updates

MB3: Rule Learning

The MB3P: Pupil Dilation spin-off project is looking for contributors (see announcement above).

CΓ‘tia Oliveira recently presented about the MB3T spin-off project at the Big Team Science Conference. View a recording of the talk here.

MB4: Social Evaluation

We are in the end game now! The hard deadline for data submission for the main project is October 31st. If you need a few days of extension to finish up data entry, please reach out to Kelsey or Francis. Unfortunately, as the journal deadline is approaching we cannot accommodate extensions for more than a few days, and ask labs that did not hit their target sample to please submit whatever data they have. If you would like to continue collecting data for the spin-off projects after October 31st, please contact Kelsey.

MB5: Hunter & Ames model of Infant Attention

We’re still waiting to hear back from Nature Human Behaviour about our Registered Report, and we will soon begin piloting the study.

MB6: Neonatal & Early Imitation

Thanks to those who contributed to our study design meeting on October 5th/6th! You can find a video of it here as well as additional notes in our running agenda. We are excited to move forward with the project and have begun drafting a Stage 1 Report. To facilitate the next steps, please complete another short survey to tell us more about you and your preferences for target stimuli. (Note that this survey is different from the one sent out last month.) As always, we welcome additional comments/feedback and questions (mb6@manybabies.org).
